On World Oceans Day, Hi Fly celebrates the most remarkable aircraft ever to carry an environmental message across the globe: the iconic “Save the Coral Reefs” Airbus A380.
More than just an aircraft, the Hi Fly A380 became a flying ambassador for ocean conservation, bringing awareness to the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems and coral reefs. Its distinctive livery delivered a powerful visual message, contrasting the consequences of environmental degradation with the beauty and biodiversity of healthy oceans.
Throughout its service, the aircraft carried this message across five continents, reaching millions of people and becoming one of the most photographed and recognised Airbus A380s in the world. It was showcased at major international events, including the Farnborough International Airshow and the Paris Air Show, helping amplify the importance of ocean protection to a global audience.
The aircraft also achieved a remarkable list of milestones. It became the first A380 to land in Portugal, the first A380 to operate flights connecting London and New York, and supported humanitarian missions during the COVID-19 outbreak. In just two years, it visited 53 airports across 33 countries and four continents, establishing Hi Fly as one of the world’s leading A380 operators by destination count.
Yet the significance of the “Save the Coral Reefs” aircraft extends beyond the records it set. It represented Hi Fly’s belief that aviation can be a powerful platform for raising awareness and inspiring positive change.
That same philosophy continues to guide the company today. Hi Fly made aviation history by operating the world’s first commercial passenger flight free from single-use plastics and has maintained its commitment to plastic-free operations in it’s own flights since 2020. Through the adoption of sustainable alternatives and continuous efforts to reduce waste, the company remains focused on minimising its environmental impact and supporting the protection of the world’s oceans.
On this World Oceans Day, we celebrate not only an extraordinary aircraft, but also the enduring commitment behind the message it carried. Protecting our oceans is not limited to a single campaign or initiative. It is a responsibility that continues to inspire action, innovation and progress every day.
